MyRadar – Weather Radar

There are literally hundreds of radar apps in the App Store, because checking the radar is an essential task for pilots and non-pilots too. Almost all of these apps use the data of the National Weather Service, so the only difference between these apps is mostly how this data is presented. One of our favorites is MyRadar. It`s free, fast and easy to use with a high quality looping radar. But as we’ve mentioned before, there are also some nice aviation features in it: like an AIRMETs & SIGMETs overlay. One of its additional feature is weather warnings and alerts (and providing push notifications). Unfortunately the app is only available in the USA.

DarkSky

Dark Sky offers scarily accurate minute-by-minute predictions for precipitation and pushes alerts so you don’t have to unlock your phone. Dark Sky app uses GPS to find the exact location updating every minute to get the most precise location. The app keeps working in the background and sends alerts to notify you about an upcoming rain, storm or thunder. A typical push notification from Dark Sky might say “Light Rain starting in 12 minutes,” which means you have exactly 12 minutes to find cover or grab an umbrella if you want to stay dry. Watch weather patterns evolve globally or right in your neighborhood in Dark Sky’s stunningly smooth map simulations. Pull storms back and forth through time – and into the future – to see what the weather has to offer.

Windy

While thunderstorms and ice get all the attention, wind is actually the most common reason for flights to get cancelled. That’s why we like this app: it shows current and forecast wind conditions (animated wind map shows cyclones and hurricanes) for thousands of locations, and offers the ability to search by airport identifier. Windy offers real-time data from 30.000+ weather stations and 1-hour accurate worldwide wind forecast from NOAA. What makes the app outstanding is its elegant design and beautiful animations. The map view – in particular is a fantastic way to get a bigger overall view.

NOAA Aviation Live Sky Weather

With NOAA Aviation Live Sky Weather you can get real-time airport weather data NOAA/NWS/NEC/AWC directly to your iPhone and iPad. You can search for weather stations and airports all over the World. Their database contains more than 2000 weather stations and the app allows you to check the weather stations and airports directly from the map or by name, description, region, US state, or geolocation (latitude, longitude – GPS location service supported). It has a favorite weather stations featue so that you can access the saved stations quickly. The lastly available aviations observations is accessible for every stations offline but you can’t have all the features when in offline mode. Nevertheless it is a practical app for free.
